Perhaps the most commonly used devices to control natural hazard induced-vibration on structures are the denominated Mass Dampers. These devices consist of an inertial element attached to a higher floor of the structure to be controlled. Through a proper tuning of their vibratory characteristics, the Mass Damper resonates out-of-phase with the structure reducing its vibration level. Tuned Liquid Dampers (TLDs) are a particular type of Mass Dampers for which the inertial element corresponds to a liquid inside a tank. These configurations present some advantages related to: lower installation costs, easy tuning process and potential use of the liquid to alternative purpose (for example the liquid can be used during fire emergencies). This video introduces a new TLD, which consists of a traditional TLD with the addition of a floating roof. Since the roof is much stiffer than water, it prevents wave breaking, which in turn makes the response linear even at large wave amplitudes. The stiff roof also makes possible the addition of supplemental dampers with which the level of damping can be substantially augmented. Further, the new device, denoted Tuned Liquid Damper with Floating Roof (TLD-FR), keeps the traditional advantages of TLDs, but its dynamic behavior is much simpler to characterize because it has only one degree of freedom. The video compares the behavior of the traditional TLD (right side) and the new TLD-FR (left side) under the same excitation.
